报告题目:

The Tectonics of Icy Satellites in the Outer Solar System and New Frontiers for Computational Geodynamical Modeling"

报告摘要:

Human exploration of our solar system has revealed a wide range of tectonic processes operated on the large number of satellites expressed by the deformation of their icy shells. Understanding the tectonic processes of icy satellites has been so far limited by our inability to quantify the role of cyclic tidal forces and evolving orbital geometry of each satellite induced by its interactions with neighboring satellites and the parent planets. This issue is further hampered by a lack of modeling sophistication as done on the tectonic deformation of the Earth. The new observations from the outer solar system present unique opportunities for mathematically gifted younger researchers, as many of the first-order physical and chemical processes are yet to be quantified. The results of such efforts will have important implications for the origin of life on our planet and elsewhere in the Universe.
