The three-dimensional S-wave velocity model from our combined ANT and TPWT tomography using both the NECESSArray temporary and CEA permanent stations has discovered slow velocity anomalies in the upper mantle beneath all the Quaternary volcanoes surrounding the Songliao Basin in Northeast China and a distinct fast velocity anomaly in the upper mantle to at least 200-km depth beneath the Songliao Basin. We proposed that with luck, we are observing an on-going mantle convection system in the upper mantle that feeds all the Quaternary volcanic activities in Northeast China and with the powerful key by NECESSArray, we have opened the door for solving the puzzle of intra-plate volcanism on continents.
