The primary goal of this group is to focus on the studying the physical processes of earthquakes and implement physics-based simulation methodologies that can predict earthquake strong-motion waveforms. Earthquake source dynamics provides key elements for the prediction of ground motion, and to understand the physics of earthquake initiation, propagation and healing. This mission is addressed through field observation, laboratory test, and numerical modeling efforts directed at characterizing and understanding the influence of material properties, geometric irregularities, and heterogeneities in stress and strain over the fault zone. These efforts will be expected to help us to improve our knowledge about the physics of earthquakes and to develop and implement physics-based simulation methodologies that can predict earthquake strong ground motions for earthquake engineering. Another task of this group is to develop the techniques of wireless sensors for seismic monitoring and try to build a seismic network based on the wireless sensors.
